Methodology and update schedule

  • Mortgages: Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) is published weekly, usually Thursdays at 12 p.m. ET. It reflects conventional, conforming purchase loans for borrowers with strong credit and 20% down. Information provided by Freddie Mac. We show the data unaltered.
  • Auto and personal loans: the Federal Reserve's G.19 Consumer Credit release reports average rates at commercial banks (quarterly series) and new-car rates at auto finance companies. Federal Reserve data is in the public domain. G.19 last updated: October 07, 2026.
  • Not shown: we don't publish FHA, VA, USDA, jumbo, HELOC or used-car averages. The free indexes we found for those are licensed for non-commercial use only or are no longer published. For those loans, compare quotes from lenders.
  • Data file: /data/rates.json (machine-readable, includes sources). Data last refreshed 2026-10-29 17:01:32 UTC.

How to use benchmark rates

Use them to see whether rates are rising or falling and to sanity-check quotes, then get offers. Compare APR, points and fees on each Loan Estimate, and see how to negotiate.

We support the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act: it is illegal to discriminate in housing or lending on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), familial status, disability or, for credit, age, marital status or receipt of public assistance.
